Ok, now I know what you mean. The reason why you did not find this
reference is because it was missing. But not in FeatureCollection, but
in GmlRendererOL. I changed this in the trunk, and now
FeatureCollection should work for you without your patch. Can you
please verify this? Thanks.

I am afraid you are misunderstanding the FeatureCollection model. This
model does not hold an ows context, but a wfs FeatureCollection. But
apart from that, your config looks sane to me.
