I would say this is not quite true. alpha1 had only a single OpenLayers demo, and was using MapPane/MapPane2 for all other demos. alpha2 has more or less finished OpenLayers integration. A lot of things changed under the hood to make that possible, and therefore is likely to not work with config files that were tailored for alpha1 out of the box.
