Markus,
Roald has copied the catalog demo into the trunk now. You should be able
to check it out and if you are lucky, run it from:
mapbuilder/demo/catalog/

Roald tells me there are still a couple of bugs and things he wants to
clean up which he is still working on. But there should be enough in
place for you to start developing against it.

I've written a brief tutorial on how to add a new data source to search at:
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/MAP/Search+Datasource

While Roald is touching up the widget, I suggest you start by writing a
Capabiltites2OWSContext.xsl

There is already a WMS Capabilities -> WMC stylesheet at
lib/tool/Caps2Context.xsl
(I'm not sure if that ever fully worked. It might have one or 2
glitches). But at the very least it should give you a solid head start.

You will need to have it return OWSContext which has a slightly
different tags to WMC.
I suspect it should not be too difficult to have it process both WFS and
WMS GetCapability requests.

Good luck, and feel free to fire questions to the list or IRC and Roald
or I will endevour to answer them. (We are in Sydney Australia if you
are trying to work out when we are awake)
