I just stumbled upon Flattr [1]. GNOME's on their users' wishlist [2]. Currently, it's probably not going to generate much money. But it might by worth to support such a donation system by integrating it into GNOME's various websites.
Also, it may be used as a popularity index, if one assumes that people click the flattr button for stuff they like. Just a thought.
