Well Joseph,

*Timeo Danos et dona ferentes* and all that.

I do not know if this guess could be described as educated, but my feeling
is that we underestimate the impact on liberals and progressivists of the
slaughter (of the children especially) in the recent burst of war
criminality. Moreover only Abbas' refusal to take Israel to the Hague
prevents that criminality from being officially recognized.

Israel is conscious, very much so, of the PR damage done to it by their
butchery. The Zionist project always required an attempt to seize the moral
high ground - a light onto the nations and all that. The ascetic figure of
Ben Gurion in his library and his retirement to a kibbutz captured that
moment perfectly. But neo-liberalism destroyed the kibbutz ethic and the
dialectics of colonial conquest brought to power the type of people who
previously were confined to practice their dirty work in cellars and prison
cells.

There is also the military failure of the Gaza offensive. this was
carefully calibrated with Egypt and the goal was nothing less than the
destruction of Hamas. What it accomplished was a truly inspiring
demonstration of the enduring determination of Palestine to survive.

Ooops!!!

So this permission to pray IMHO is a gesture meant to make the butchers and
the perpetrators of colonial conquest and the specialists in the dirty
business of ethnic cleansing appear to be more like statesmen.

It is merely a gesture, but one they feel compelled to make. Even though
in the making of it they unconsciously reveal how horrible the status quo
is. Being allowed by the conquerors to pray in one of the holiest shrines
in Islam, just shows how much the freedom of worship has been restricted.

comradely
