The article on conditions in
Crimea that was recently published in the Washington Post and then posted to
this mail list has also appeared in the Toronto Star, Canada's largest
circulation daily newspaper, yesterday. The article is an occasion to catch up
on information about Crimea. I am in the process of writing a reply to it, in
collaboration with an editor in Ukraine. In the meantime, let me say a
couple of things.
I am looking forward to reading Roger's article, especially how nimbly I
expect him to pirouette around the preponderance of evidence that
Crimean Tatars preferred to be part of Ukraine and how conditions have
worsened for them under Russian rule. If he can't trust the bourgeois
press, maybe he can explain to us how Amnesty International has become
the cat's paw of American imperialism by issuing statements that include
the following:
“The Russian authorities have allowed armed groups that have been behind
some brutal attacks against the Tatars to operate freely in Crimea. They
have alienated Crimean Tatars by harassing Tatar leaders, threatening to
dissolve their highest representative body, and restricting their rights
to freedom of assembly and expression.
“Up to 7,000 Tatars have fled Crimea already. Those who have stayed face
the unenviable choice of having to give up their Ukrainian citizenship
and accept a Russian one or become ‘foreigners’ in their homeland.”

Btw, Roger, if you want to maintains some shred of credibility, I'd
advise you to think twice about posting Workers World material on your
website. Their reputation is worse than you can possibly imagine. You
might as well post from RT.com. Come to think of it, you probably do.
