Yes there is nothing new about it, though it is appalling for a left government to continue it. Note that it is the right-winger Kammenos from ANEL making all the pro-Zionist statements in this article (even though he is also known to make anti-Jewish statements), rather than Syriza leaders. The Greece-Cyprus-Israel hydrocarbons alliance against Turkey in the east Mediterranean has been an established fact for the last 5 years at least. Egypt now comes into it as Sissi is an Israeli asset, and is likewise at loggerheads with Turkey since overthrowing the AKP's ally, the MB regime. At the same time, this is contradictory for Greece, as it is also negotiating an agreement with Turkey and Russia for the gas pipeline into Europe. In that case, Greece needs to get closer to its historic nationalist rival Turkey. Just as the first alliance leads Greece to go all cuddly to Zionists and Sissi, the second leads Greece to say all nice things about Putin. When you're desperate to escape Germany's clutches, you might say anything. The second, however, has one advantage: burying the hatchet with the historic nationalist rival of Greek capital, Turkish capital, is at least useful in helping Greek workers escape that nationalist anti-Turk poison. In the case of the Israeli alliance, Michael says "Does Iran represent a serious threat to Greece?" Of course not. But Iran also doesn't represent a threat to Israel, and Israel knows it. Netanyahu simply needs the valuable "Fourth Reich that wants to wipe Israel off the face of the earth getting nuclear weapons" propaganda to bolster Zionist ideology (the Iranian theocratic despots need the same BS propaganda in reverse). Much of Israel's military-security apparatus are far more supportive of the US deal with Iran. Kammenos just repeats what he thinks Netanyahu wants to hear. When Greek leaders met Sissi folk, they didn't go on about Iran (in fact Sissi is daily drawing closer to Iran, partly due to their shared love of Assad), they went on about "terrorism", meaning the MB and the Sunni jihadis, ie Sissi's concerns. Al in all, very sad times for Greek workers and for internationalism. I sent it not so much out of any, now useless, need to issue condemnations, as to highlight how bad the situation was. But now for the discussion about why European-wide working class solidarity so spectacularly failed over the last 6 months.
