Newton was obsessed with alchemy, which was not considered to be junk science at the time. Instead, the government was doing everything possible to support alchemists who seem to promise the answer to a scarcity of money that was harming the economy. At the same time, the alchemists shared some perspective with another junk science, monetarism. The monetarist alchemists kept their work secret because they thought that if it became common knowledge that would be too much gold which would cause inflation and harm the economy. However, they wanted alchemy to create sufficient gold -- sort of like a Taylor rule for the 17th century.
