Clancy Sigal has a new memoir out. Considering that he is in his 90s, getting out of bed in the morning is an achievement but Clancy is an extraordinary figure either in his 90s or in his 30s when he wrote "Going Away", a roman a clef about leaving the USA to go to England as an emigre. When I read the novel about 35 years ago, I was stunned by how similar the experience of ex-CPers was to ex-Trotskyists. They were disillusioned by the Khrushchev revelations. We were disillusioned by Jack Barnes's transformation of the SWP into a cult. Clancy was Doris Lessing's lover and received a not too flattering treatment in "Golden Notebook". Then again Lessing had her own flaws as a human being. Don't we all?
