Cyber-utopianism has lapsed into cyber-cynicism. The social industry was once the repository of democratic, progressive hopes: Twitter revolution. Now it is associated with 'fake news', conspiracism, far-right subcultures and lone wolf killers. Did we misunderstand the politics of the machine? Made by Pentagon conservatism and Silicon Valley libertarianism, globalised by Washington liberalism - is there something about it that is incipiently fascist?
