-------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elimination of the exploitation of man by man! Yours in solidarity Per Rasmussen Denmark http://home0.inet.tele.dk/pera/ http://w1.1559.telia.com/~u155900373/ -----Oprindelig meddelelse----- Fra: Walter Lippmann [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sendt: 12. maj 2000 23:21 Til: Peace Center Emne: [Cuba SI] Elián, Hianny and Salvation May 9, 2000 Elián, Hianny and Salvation It was good news to hear that Elian Gonzalez has finally been reunited with his father, Juan Miguel. But six-year old Elián is not yet home-free. There's a court order that makes it illegal for Elián to go home with his father. He must first appear before the judges of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals who will determine whether he wants to and will be permitted to defect from his country and from his father so as to be able to grow up in the only land of the free and the brave. Certainly, Elián has been coached for months by his grand-uncle and his political advisors as evidenced by his appearance on television pointing his finger accusingly at his father who they have until now prevented him from seeing. Little Elián clearly laid out his terms- his father must defect too or he washes his hands of him. Of course anyone can understand that a six-year -old can be brain-washed. However, what indeed are the freedoms and privileges that great-uncle Lazaro and his co-conspirators want so desper- ately for Elián to have, and that he will not have if he returns to his native land with his father? If Elián returned to Cuba, he would probably never have the opportunity to go to a school where some of his classmates bring guns and other weapons. He would never be privileged to have to find large sums of money for tuition if he wanted to continue school beyond the first twelve grades. He would never have the freedom to be turned away from needed medical care because he couldn't afford the treatments he needed. Elián would never be able to experience going into a voting booth to select one of two candidates, both of whom have been preselected by the big corporations to represent them. He might never know violent movies and video- games, junk food, shopping mania, addictions, racism and religious bigotry. He might have only one-twentieth the opportunity to spend part of his life in a prison. Indeed, Elián must be totally unaware of all these privileges that he would forfeit if the court refuses his asylum petition. But such small matters will not dampen the determination of the exiles and politicians who insist on saving this young boy from his father and his native country. When the prestigious 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta convenes to hear "Elián's" request for asylum, they will certainly want to protect the little boy from a father who clearly has some wrong political ideas. How much better it would be for Elián to be growing up in the custody of his granduncle whose two convictions for drunk driving makes him a perfect candidate to teach Elián about automobiles, responsibility and such. How much better for Elián to bond with his cousin, Marisleysis than his father, especially since Marisleysis has so much experience being hospitalized for mental instability. And of course, the Court will not overlook the advantages for Elián to have two other cousins of this Miami family who are such excellent models for a young boy since they have been convicted of robbery and have served time in prison. But wait! If, indeed, returning to Cuba would be intolerable for little Elián, wouldn't it also be equally intolerable for his infant half-brother, Hianny who is now so fortunate to be in this free country. Listen exiles and politicians-is your heart only big enough to want to save one little boy? Can you in all conscience let Hianny return to and grow up in that despicable country? You know you would be able to kidnap him too and keep him safely from that evil INS. They wouldn't dare to take him by force as they did Elián! They wouldn't risk all that bad publicity a second time. You have the moral duty to bring Hianny to the 11th Court of Appeals so he can also have his day in court. What say you? He is only an infant and cannot tell the Court that he wants asylum? That is no problem. Elián can speak for Hianny. After all, isn't he his half-brother? Besides, all of you know that when he grows up, Hianny will thank Elián and all of you for defending his right to escape Cuba. Incidentally, how do you exiles, politicians and judges of the 11th Court of Appeals understand how this problem of Elián and Hianny began in the first place? Who is to blame? It seems that you might logically argue that Juan Miguel Gonzalez is to blame. After all, it was his very bad judgment to have two children in a country not approved by the government of the United States! Explaining all this certainly would be a great educational contribution to the American people and to people all over the world. Hopefully, you exiles, politicians and judges will not shirk from this opportunity and responsibility. But wait! If you can save Elián and Hianny from having to grow up in Cuba, don't you have the obligation to save all the other unfortunate children whose parents decided to have them in a not-approved country? By golly you do! And it can be done! A humanitarian airlift can be arranged through the United Nations and NATO, organizations which are now obliged to follow the wishes and needs of the United States government. And there is a precedent. During the 1960's, soon after the Cuban revolution, the CIA got together with some dedicated Batista-ites and the Catholic Church to airlift thousands of children from Cuba to the United States. They called the operation, Peter Pan. It was easy to do. The three groups forged a document that they claimed was a new law passed by the revolutionary government of Cuba, that they said would allow the government to take children away from their parents and send them to far away places like the Soviet Union. So many parents, in order to avoid having their children sent away, sent their children away! Since the Cuban missile crisis followed, and travel became frozen on both sides, some parents didn't see their children for years, and others never saw them again. But these children grew up as free Americans. The Peter Pan operation is an excellent model to follow, but instead of just thousands who could be brought here, none of the children of Cuba should be excluded from this beneficent kidnapping plan, a humanitarian action never before attempted on such a scale anywhere in the world! But wait! If you were to appeal to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to airlift all the children in Cuba to save them from the sins of their parents and from Fidel Castro, are you not morally obligated to the children everywhere in the world, who don't grow up in this home of the free and the brave, to bring them here? If Elián and Hianny and all the children of Cuba are approved to be saved through an altruistic decision of the 11th Court of Appeals, shouldn't all children be given the same opportunity to end their misery living in other countries? Some countries are not approved and the others, although they are approved, are not really the right country for children to grow up in. This appeal to the Court, to the exiles and to the politicians, if heeded and acted upon, would make our country the savior of the world. How would this take place? There would be so many children in the United States that they would take over from the relatively small number of adults. In no time at all, our country would reverse its policies. We would end environmental pollution and the precarious protraction of global warming. We would agree to the total destruction of nuclear weapons everywhere on the planet, and all other weapons. We would end destruction of our forests and of thousands of species, including our own, that are now endangered. We would put an end to the serious threat to the world's nutritional supply that is posed by mega agricorporate greed now motivating the genetic altering and nuking of our food. We would turn our energies into fulfilling the economic, social, cultural, housing, health care and educational needs of people everywhere. We would create a truly democratic society and end the system of corruption, greed and privilege that has plagued us for so long. Listen exiles, politicians and judges of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, be perseverant. Do the right thing. Let Elián, Hianny and the children everywhere have the opportunity to save us from you.
