SERBS SHOW SUPPORT FOR DETAINEES IN U.N.-RULED KOSOVSKA MITROVICA

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA - Thousands of Serbs marched through the streets of U.N.-ruled
Kosovska Mitrovica on Tuesday before fetching up outside the district prison in a
demonstration of support for detained hunger-strikers.

Serbs and Romanies detained for months without a trial in this prison in the Serbian
(Yugoslav) U.N.-administered Kosovo-Metohija province have been on hunger strike for
35 days now, demanding an investigation into their alleged crimes and a fair trial.

Their womenfolk have been supporting them by a hunger strike of their own for eight
days now outside the prison gates.

The assembled Serbs demanded that trial dates be set immediately, that those detained
without just cause be released pending trial and that adequate medical treatment be
provided for the hunger-strikers.
