‘Obama visit may lead to arms race in the region'
Special Correspondent
Agreement signed for military purchases by India would lead to accumulation of
arms: MCPI (U)JAIPUR: The Marxist Communist Party of India (United) has warned
of an arms race in the region in the wake of the recent pact on arms purchase
signed between India and the US during the visit of the US President Barack
Obama. The agreement signed for military purchases to the tune of 10 million
dollars by India would lead to “unhealthy competition in accumulating arms and
ammunition in the area,” the party, which is having its second national Party
Congress in Jodhpur, observed.
“Now India is not in need of accumulating arms,” said Lyal Puri, general
secretary of the party releasing the draft political resolution at Onkar Nagar
in Jodhpur on Friday. The release of the draft resolution was followed by
discussions which would continue on Saturday as well.
Speaking on the resolution, Mr. Puri said capitalism was getting into more and
more crisis and there was no escaping of it as this was inherent in this
system. “As Karl Marx pointed out in 1848 the capitalism is trying to escape
from the crisis by passing the burden on to the shoulders of the common man and
this would lead to further crisis,” he noted.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) came in for some criticism on the
opening day of the congress as MCPI (U) leaders -- who mostly are those thrown
out of the CPI (M) in the past -- accused it of promoting globalization.
“The CPI (M) was formed after the inner party struggle against revisionism in
the CPI. But the same CPI (M) has become the revisionist party implementing
policies of globalization,” Mr. Puri charged.
V.B. Cheriyan, a senior member of the party attending the Congress said the
election of the new Central Council and the new general secretary would take
place on November 14, the concluding day. A public rally is scheduled in
Jodhpur on Saturday, he informed.
