The Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) has announced the formation of a People's
Liberation Army, a newspaper reported on Saturday. The announcement comes
four and half years after the Maoists began their "people's war" aimed at
replacing the present western-style democracy and abolishing the Nepalese
monarchy. News about the People's Liberation Army was broken by a senior
insurgency commander at a press conference, the Nepali daily Samacharpatra
said.

The "commander" was identified merely as Comrade Ramesh. The press
conference, also attended by a representative of a human rights group, took
place on Thursday in the jungles of Jureli Danda near Khalanga in Jajarkot
district, about 425 km from Kathmandu.

The formation of a regular Army by the Maoists gives a new twist to the
conflict that successive governments have been unable to tackle. The war has
claimed almost 1,500 lives, the largest number ever killed in Nepal in a
conflict with any single political movement.(DPA)
