Fighting for jobs in the global economy
BY DICK NICHOLS
Every time the death knell tolls for some factory or industry in the old
industrial towns of the advanced industrial world, the workers involved
are torn between three basically irreconcilable reactions. The first is
to
fight for what they've got, the second is to find ways to protect
themselves from the competition and the third is to resign themselves to
the "inevitable".

S11 Alliance calls for trade union support
BY JORGE JORQUERA
MELBOURNE -- The S11 Alliance has issued a call for trade unionists to
support the non-violent three-day blockade of the World Economic Forum's
summit at the Crown Casino beginning September 11. The alliance is
seeking
endorsements from trade unions and has invited the Trade Hall
Council-organised rally on September 12 to march to the blockade.

BY PIP HINMAN
SYDNEY -- Indonesian union leader Romawaty Sinaga, of the the Indonesian
National Front for Labour Struggle (FNPBI), and Francisco Pascual, of
the
Philippine People's Development Resource Centre, are the two

September 2. The seminars will discuss labour movement resistance to

S11: high school activists debate tactics
BY JODY BETZIEN
MELBOURNE -- Beginning September 11, this city will experience a myriad
of
anti-World Economic Forum (WEF) actions. There is a lot of discussion
and
debate about how to coordinate and organise these many diverse actions
so
as to maximise their effectiveness. One particularly important
discussion
has arisen due to the fact that two high school student actions have
been
scheduled for September 11, both at the same venue but at different
times.

S11 forum discusses strategy
BY GRAHAM MATTHEWS
BRISBANE -- "The demonstrations in Seattle have opened a significant
crack
in the ideological stronghold of the international financial
institutions", said Max Lane, addressing a public meeting of more than
100
sponsored by the S11 Alliance here on August 8.

S11 activists target McDonald's
ADELAIDE -- Thirty people demonstrated outside McDonald's in the Rundle
Mall here on August 4 to protest against the multinational's attacks on
the environment, underdeveloped nations and workers' rights. The action,
organised by the Adelaide S11 Alliance, attracted 200 supportive
spectators.

Corporate think tanks assault environmentalism
BY JIM GREEN
Welcome to the world of the conservative think tank, a world in which
modern forestry "helps preserve wildlife habitat", "radioactive waste
has
a great advantage over other kinds of waste", "a camel is a horse
designed
by a committee", and humanity is "entering an age of increasing and
unprecedented natural resources abundance".

UNITED STATES: 'The poor will not be disappeared'
PHILADELPHIA -- While the smug elite of the US Republican Party gathered
here in plush hotels and a huge new convention centre to celebrate their
wealth and to anoint two rich white men to lead their presidential
ticket,
the US poor and their allies were very visible, and very vocal, in the
streets. Women, the disabled, children, people of colour, immigrants,
the
unemployed, underpaid and uninsured all marched, danced, sang and spoke
up
loud and clear.
