It appears that I can't adjust the Gamma on an *external* monitor connected to my MBA, even if it's the *only* functioning display (i.e. the lid on the MacBook is closed). This actually raises an error in the GammaMBS class (which is good), but other programs don't seem to have a problem adjusting the monitor gamma in this configuration, so it feels like a bug.
Not a big deal, but if and when you get around to looking at the code it's yet another thing to check on...
