LOCKHEED MARTIN DELIVERS THIRD RETURN TO FLIGHT EXTERNAL TANK TO NASA

NEW ORLEANS, LA., June 13, 2005 -- Lockheed Martin’s (NYSE: LMT) third retrofitted Space Shuttle External Tank, designated ET-119, departed today via ocean-going barge for a five-day trip to Kennedy Space Center (KSC). NASA will assign the tank to one of its upcoming Return to Flight shuttle missions.

Lockheed Martin delivered the tank to NASA on June 12 after waiting three days for Tropical Storm Arlene to clear the Gulf of Mexico.

Lockheed Martin designs and builds the External Tank at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans.

In addition to the design and process improvements included on the first two Return to Flight tanks delivered to NASA, ET-119 features a heater installed on the Liquid Oxygen (LO2) feedline bellows. The heater is designed to prevent the formation of frost or ice that may form on the bellows, a bare metal component of the feedline that allows the structure to flex during launch and ascent. The feedline carries cryogenic LO2 at a temperature of minus 297 degrees F.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems – Michoud Operations designs and builds large aluminum and composite structures for aerospace and other applications at the Michoud Assembly Facility.

Photos of the ET-119 rollout are available at www.lockheedmartin.com/Michoud under “Michoud Image Gallery.”
