They were never sold that way originally, but I know there are at least a few of them running around. I understand it's a pretty easy swap, since the hardtop was available with the diesel and all the mounting points are the same. I'd worry a bit about noise, though. A normally-aspirated VW diesel at high RPM makes quite a bellow, especially from the intake.
