Marshall,
I thought the OM617 was the most bullet proof engine. I know I have been
trying for the last year to blow mine up. I just can not justify driving a
car to the junk yard and leaving it.
My 1985 300SD with over 300k miles on it has never left me stranded. The
water pump started leaking on a trip, let it cool and added more water and
drove 200 miles home. My wife drove 100 miles with E-brake on, kept complain
that the car was slow and I kept say it was a diesel, yes the light and
brakes did work but she never noticed, till she stopped at red light and
asked what was that smell and then asked why car would not move.
Oh wait it did leave me once, when the mechanical part of ignition switch
broke. Took me almost a whole day to drill out switch and replace. When I
replaced it with a used one, I took all the tumblers out such that it will
never have a problem again. My wife asked if it was easier to steal with out
tumblers, I said I hope so.
I occasionally will drop transmission into first gear going 50MPH, yes it is
really bad for car, but it stops people from tailgating really quick as it
blows lots of black smoke. The governor limits engine speed to about 4500,
but I can get about 5000 RPM out of it this way.
I also have disconnected the waste gate for last 6k miles, just to see if
over boosting will blow it up. I don't think it has enough compression left
for the over boost to make a difference.
Now I think the transmission will go long before the engine.
And what's the question?
Marshall
