Workaround
This "fixes" it (forward-port of reverting the commit causing the problem,
applies cleanly on 17.2.0-rc4) -- but obviously it isn't a perfect fix because
it brings back the problems the original commit was meant to solve.
Certainly better than X crashing on startup though ;)
