Ok, so for the symantics of that definition, would you call that a reduction reaction not involving oxygen, and not oxidation.. ?
In general, oxidation is the loss of electrons, and reduction is the gain of electrons. Those terms are used in modern chemistry whether or not oxygen is involved.
