Can aggree, perhaps some 40 % of my collection is NWA:s, bought from
dealers I know, I can catch after an year or perhaps after ten years...;-

Iīm also a collector of artifacts, and some arrow-heads may have 5 - 10
labels to find out the origin of the item. If the chain of the owners is
broken, it means problems, when selling the artifact.

I was a bit provocative in my former mail, but all this is not good for the
hobby or for the business.

Many of my NWA:s are bought from Hupeīs and other well-known dealers.
When I put the specimen ahead, the original label will follow, and I enclose
my own, so if the buyer find the specimen as something else he / she thought
to buy after 10 years, we can find the beef.

Itīs not realistic to think, the buyer is in response, what he / she is buying, so
the only way at the moment is to trust in the seller. Everybody makes mistakes,
but an honest seller corrects them, and thatīs all. When I know the first
owner of the specimen and he / she is a serious delaer / collector, no problem.

But we have to remember, this is a very sensitive hobby / business, and itīs not
looking very wise to me to arque in public, who owns a number / possible
pairings etc... before you are absolute sure, what is the truth, or the best quess,
all can aggree (many scientifical "truths" are just the best quesses).

As I said, itīs not realistic to belive, the buyer will check every specimen he / she
buys. Anyway, many of us makes trades with universities and others, who have
the possibility to have a closer look at the specimen. I sure know, if Iīd trade an
ordinary chondrite as a lunar to the universtiy of Helsinki, Iīll have a call in a day
or two.

The authenticy of the specimen is the first thing, serious (or not so serious) colector
is interrested in (the size and quality are secundary, and are up to that, how much
you are going to spend for the specimen).

I consider myself a serious collector and NWA represents most of our
collection. Some of the rarest, most scientifically significant and
beautiful pieces have come from the Sahara. Close to half of all planetary
meteorites have been pulled from NWA. If you do not collect NWA you are
missing out on some of the world's best material.

Oh, is it, that "serious collectors" don't accept NWA in their collections?

Or is this rather some shitty snobist attitude?

Thank you for calling me a "non-serious collector". :-(

Well, this is one reason, why some serious collectors donīt accept NWA:s in their collection.

Iīm stil wondering, to be or not to be...;- Anyway, not the
best way to advertise these beauties - to make them as the
easter-eggs.

Yes it is confusing!

To me, all it's done is make every single meteorite label in our
collections questionable. - i.e 'a probably rather than an actually'

Clearly there is no way to guarantee authenticity if people sell
unchecked stuff, - yes even if someone in a bar in Morroco said it
originated from a known strewnfield. So as long as everyone

appreciates

that then fair enough.

Personally, I say never mind the dealers, the Buyers should get stuff
checked! - I certainly will from now on, all Lunar Martian stuff etc I
buy will gonna be checked over a lot more stringently than usual...

As someone, who is trying to follow this discussion,
my eyes are starting glaze over with NWA 1110 this;
NWA 2223 that; NWA 3133 is mine; NWA 3133 is not
yours; my NWA 1906 is real; your NWA 1906 is fake;
may the real NWA 788, NWA 787, or NWA 482,
please stand up. It is hard to search back through
the innumerable posts, given the lack of a search
engine specifically for the archives, to find out the
details behind each specific number is being talked
about.

At some point, it seems someone needs to provide
a "scorecard" of some sort, if it doesn't already
exist, about what each of these "players" (meteorites)

in the number game are about. It would help the soft
core, uninitiated lurkers better understand what is
the significance of NWA XXXX versus either
NWA YYYY or NWA YYXX.

As the posts go back and forth about these numbers,
I think of a song to the tune of "This Land is Your
Land" that starts out as "NWA 1110 is My number,
NWA 1110 is not your number from Uranus to Mercury..."
appearing at some point.

Yours,

Paul
