Hi John and Jim, Thanks for the clarifications. Every piece of hematite that I've had has been attracted to a magnet, but as you said, it probably had other iron with it.
And what I meant by "hematite is a metal" was that it is a metal as far as most people are concerned. It is 70% iron and looks and feels like metal, so most people will call it a metal even thought that is not the chemical term (metal oxide).
