Thanks for your feedback on the problem. However I'm still curious if it is possible to define where log files are written to for the portable version. Do you know if there is a way to configure the target folder for the log files of miktex portable? I tried modifying the log4cxx.win.xml file and also setting environment variables MIKTEX_LOG_DIR and LOG4CXX_CONFIGURATION but it seems those settings are all ignored.
