Well it seems once the machine is up..if I kill ppp and restart it, everything is logged.

So a look, seems to tell me that the network comes up prior to syslogd starting and as such, syslog is not available to log while ppp starts.

I start pppoe the 'new' way as was discussed:

/etc/hostname.tun0
!/usr/sbin/ppp -ddial isp

..is there any work around? - Hack /etc/rc to force syslogd to start before the network does (I dont do any remote logging in/out anyways or any remote mount points)?

Or resort back to starting ppp under /etc/rc.local ?

Anyone have this issue and/or advice?
