Hello all,

I was recently at Chalmers Technical University in Göteborg where Erik Bolin
and his group are coordinating the Mobile Barometer for Sweden. They are
cooperating with Japan where Hitoshi Mitomo ofWaseda University is the main
contact person.

The Swedish group has produced a report based on the 2007 work. It does a good
job of giving the reader insight into the situation in Sweden. For example,
they have found that quality of display, battery life, weight and price are
some of the most important issues when deciding on the purchase of a new phone.
Interestingly, taking pictures is the most common "advanced function." Sending
and receiving MMS lags behind.

The group at Chalmers is oriented towards the economics of mobile
communication. Thus, there are several questions on the questionnaire that deal
with these issues. The people from Chalmers who presented provided a lot of
good insight into these dimensions of mobile communication.

In addition Heikki Hämmäinen and Hannu Verkasalo from Helsinki University of
Technology and Oscar Westlund, University of Gothenburg were also there.

The group from Helsinki presented some very interesting material based on their
tracking of smart phones (not-surprisingly Nokia smart phones). For these
rather special users, the multi-media (largely music listening I think) has
increased and the portion of total mobile phone use time given to communication
has decreased. It needs to be noted, however that the total "pie" is growing.
They also examined the connection between the intention to use different
functions and their actual use (based on traffic registration). Things like
camera use and image viewing are pretty much aligned on these two dimensions.
Email and MMS have the largest gap. That is, people say they will use this, but
then never get around to using it.

Additional people from Chalmers were Tsani Annafari, Nattawut Ard-Paru,
Ann-Sofie Axelsson, Erik Bohlin, Ilona Heldal, Ibrahim Kholilul Rohman, Orada
Teppayayon, Chalita Srinuan, Pratompong Srinuan.
