Thanks! This appears to have fixed my problem (though it may have broken
CPAN.pm -- it keeps saying "Package comes without Makefile.PL" even though
it does -- but this is off-topic -- forget I even mentioned it).
"Compile statically" is like a mantra* on this list (at least when it
comes to apache modules), so it never occurred to me that building perl
itself like this would work better than the static build.
* another mantra of course being "don't use Redhat's prebuilt RPMs"
