Initial Comment:
I could only find one instance in the code base
of this function.

The attached patch fixes the issue.

Note that I crash if the call fails; seems like
a decent route as something is seriously
wrong in this case.

The other option was to log a warning
and set #cpus = 1.

The other code paths don't check the
return value of the sysctl call.
