On Thursday, July 12, Hosmer Library's Bucks for Brains
Program (sponsored by Green Central Weed & Seed Initiative)
awarded kids for improving their grades over the last
quarter of the school year. At a pizza party sponsored by
area businesses and Council Member Herron, kids ate pizza,
juice, soda and cookies. As their names were called, 22
kids were issued checks for their improved grades, which
checks were immediately cashed so that kids took home cold
hard cash.
Bucks for Brains, the brainchild of Hosmer tutor/mentor
Willie Glenn pays kids $2.00 each time they raise their
school grades one letter value. If they raise their grades
to As, they are paid $2.50 per A. Hosmer issued checks for
$315.50 total. Hosmer library kids took home as much as
$25.00 (one case only) for grade improvements. The average
check was $16.50.
Hosmer will begin Bucks for Brains again when school begins
in the fall. Kids should sign up the last week of August at
Hosmer. There will be room for 100 kids in the program.
It was a joy to watch them be rewarded for doing such a good
job. For more than half the kids, English is their second
language.
