PhD Position in Machine Translation
As a member of the Department of Information and Communication
Technology (heig-vd.ch/tic) and of its Institute for ICT
(iict.heig-vd.ch), your objectives will be the following ones:
Participate in a Swiss National Science Foundation project on
heterogeneous knowledge integration within statistical and neural
machine translation systems.
Carry out research towards a PhD degree, to improve and unify models of
document-level dependencies, in order to demonstrate a cumulative
improvement of translation quality. The PhD thesis will focus on
designing neural models of discourse-level dependencies, and on using
them on demand in neural vs. statistical MT systems.
The PhD student will be registered in one of the doctoral schools of a
partner university (e.g., EPFL, Geneva, Lausanne, etc.).
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Masters degree or equivalent in computer science, statistical methods,
or natural language processing. Previous experience with NLP, machine
translation, machine learning, deep neural networks. Strong programming
skills (e.g. in Python or C++). Strong academic record and a clear
aptitude for research. Autonomy, creativity, good capacities for
analysis and organization of work. Good command of English and good
writing skills.
JOB DETAILS
Full-time position. Starting date: January 2020 or later. Annual
contracts, with a maximum duration of four years.
