MT-List members will be interested to learn that TAUS (Translation
Automation Users Society) has received overwhelming support for a new
language resources project from a group of 26 large organizations deeply
involved in multilingual communications.

At a meeting held in March, it was agreed to develop a business plan for a
language data-sharing industry co-operative. This will be lead-managed by
TAUS with the help of a Steering Committee representing most of the
organizations present.

Language data such as translation memories and parallel text corpora and
terminology resources seem destined to shift from the desktop to servers and
now to industry-shared respositories. There is a strong groundswell among
large-scale users of transaltion automation and workflows to embrace this
cooperative approach. By pooling existing corporate silos of language data,
it will be possible to provide advanced leveraging for large translation
loads, and improved training data for various types of machine translation
systems. A co-operative platform should also help member/subscribers access
new markets faster, and identify and streamline terminology compliance in
different industry domains.

The organizations interested in the co-operative plan include large
companies, public organizations and language technology developers. The
following attended the historic meeting that led to this consensus and
hopefully opened a new chapter in large-scale resource sharing, data-driven
language technology development, and the sharing of best practices and
skills: Adobe, Autodesk, Canadian Government Translation Bureau, Cisco, CLS
Communication, eBay, EMC, European Patent Office, Hewlett-Packard, Idiom
Technologies, International Monetary Fund, Intel, Language Weaver, Lingotek,
Lionbridge, Microsoft, Molina Healthcare, Multicorpora, Oracle, Paypal, PTC,
SDL, Sun Microsystems, TM Marketplace, UGS and Welocalize.
