******************************
The Music and Audio Research Laboratory (MARL
<https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/marl>) welcomes applications for a postdoctoral
associate position on the Spatial Sound Scene Description (S3D) project. S3D
<https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/marl/research/projects/s3d-spatial-sound-scene-description>
is
a new initiative, funded by the National Science Foundation, that aims to
develop computational approaches to describe sound sources in real
environments by their category (e.g. dog, truck), location, direction of
motion and speed. Our approach mixes innovative data collection and machine
listening solutions including probabilistic synthesis, multi-modal
annotation, self-supervised representation learning and structured
classification.

The duties of the postdoctoral associate include:
(a) Research and development on novel single and multi-modal
self-supervised learning strategies for audio;
(b) Research and development on sound source classification, localization
and tracking;
(c) Leading research teams and mentoring students;
(d) Disseminating research outcomes through publications, presentations,
data and code repositories;
(e) Active contribution to open code/data efforts in the lab;
(f) Contribution to the development of new projects, partnerships and
grants.

Terms of the position:
- This is a Full-time position based in New York City.
- Preferred start date: January, 2021
- Salary: $70,000/year plus benefits
- Application deadline: October 15, 2020

Qualifications:
- Required Education: A doctoral degree (or all but defense) in CS, EE,
music technology or related discipline, by the start date of the position.
- Required Experience: Proficiency in all of: (a) machine learning; (b)
signal processing; and (c) Python programming. Familiarity with large-scale
computing is highly desirable.
- Preferred Experience: Familiarity with one or several of: (a) machine
listening and/or MIR; (b) self-supervised learning; (c) speech, image
and/or video processing.

MARL <https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/marl> brings together scholars from a
variety of disciplines to explore the intersection between music, sound,
technology and science. Its goals are to combine knowledge and methods from
science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the arts to: understand
and model human cognitive abilities in music; innovate the analysis,
organization and creation of sound and music; and advance new models of
music engagement, interaction and learning. The lab currently has more than
30 researchers, has received $10M in funding over the last decade, and
occupies new, state-of-the-art facilities in the NYU Brooklyn campus.

We are strongly committed to a culture of diversity and inclusion, and
encourage applications from women and traditionally underrepresented
minorities in STEM research.
