Sorry if I wasn't clear. I had indeed changed the 2 files holding host name and rebooted and that's when the visible xfce bar re-appeared in frontend.
'No changes made' was what was reported as a result of the futile attempt to reset mythtv with: 'sudo apt-get install mythtv' I'm back with my spawned script workaround - see the 19 May 2014 entry above.
