I'm echoing everything Jim said. I cannot remember if Nagios has ever crashed on me. I do restart (rather than just reload the config files) it on a fairly regular basis, though, as I get asked to make changes. Do you know how the process is being terminated? Any clues in the system logs? I use a system very much like Jim describes to provide failover redundancy, but I use the stock check_nagios plugin running over ssh. The check_nagios plugin also monitors the age of the status file to ensure Nagios has written fresh data.
