Washington State Democrats Target "Dean of the anti-Indian movement"

Since entering politics 40 years ago, Senator Slade Gorton has fought tribes
on land and water rights, tried to overturn treaty guarantees to fisheries,
sought to undermine tribal sovereignty, and has been a vocal opponent to
Indian gaming and other attempts at economic self-suffiency.

Described by Jamestown S'Klallam tribal Chair and National Congress of
American Indians President Ron Allen as "the dean of the anti-Indian
movement", Gorton has literally made a career out of opposing the rights of
Indian people.

Thankfully, Slade Gorton is up for re-election in 2000, and this time he
can, and will, be defeated.

The Washington State Democratic Party is hard at work laying the groundwork
for a successful 2000 campaign. They have already conducted a poll which
shows Gorton to be unpopular and vulnerable to a Democratic challenger.
Gorton is hampered by a negative job approval rating, and only 18% of those
polled said they would "definitely vote Gorton".

The Washington Democrats have outlined an ambitious program that will focus
on the early work that will set the stage for a successful challenge:
research, targeting and educating key voters, grassroot organizing, and
other activities.

The Washington Democrats have received support from tribes throughout
Washington State, and are beginning to work with tribes across the country
who recognize that Gorton is a threat to tribal interests nationwide..

In addition to assistance from Indian Country, we are receiving enthusiastic
support from allies in labor, the environmental community, women's
organizations, attorneys, and individuals throughout the state--
demonstrating that the effort to defeat Slade Gorton is truly broad based
and unified.
