S.L. Chamber opposes N-waste storage

Deseret News, June 1, 1999

The Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce's board has voted to oppose a
proposal to create a nuclear waste storage site on the Skull Valley Goshute
Indian Reservation, about 40 miles west of Salt Lake City.

According to a press release, board members said they were concerned with
the safety of the storage because the proposed site is located near
earthquake faults, the configuration of the storage pad is uncertain and
the site is located in a flight path used by Hill Air Force Base.

A consortium of eight power companies has submitted a license application
to store waste at the site.

"Board members, in general, vigorously oppose nuclear waste storage in
Utah," said Larry G. Mankin, chamber president and chief executive. "The
Skull Valley site is unique in that the Goshute Indian Tribe is in need of
revenue. The chamber plans to enter into discussions with the tribe to
determine ways to assist the reservation in diversifying its economy."
