STOP THE WAR IN CHIAPAS

We, a collection of different organizations within Mexican civil society,
hereby make a matter of public knowledge our repudiation of and
indignation regarding the new military-police offensive unleashed this
month of June against communities which are civil support bases and civil
society sympathizers of the EZLN.

We denounce the following facts:

June 1st. In El Limonar (between Chilon and Palenque) 300 soliders
irrupted in that community to dissolve a zapatista protest of the
deforestation of the region. They arrested two leaders of Xi'Nich, an
indigenous organization. Indigenous people of the region denounced
pressures and attacks against the communities located in the
municipalities of Ocosingo and Chilon.

In Tres Cruces, Chamula, members of the public security forces installed a
roadblock, executing nighttime sorties into the community of Bautista
Chico.

June 2nd. In El Censo (in Canhada Taniperla, Ocosingo), three Public
Security trucks surrounded and struck the home of Joaquin Hernandez
Guzman. They violently arrested Miguel Hernandez Sanchez. Police and
paramilitaries sacked the house and beat Mrs. Anita Sanchez Vallinas. Mr.
Joaquin Hernandez Guzman is being persecuted and receiving death threats.

June 3rd. In Betania (in Canhada La Soledad). Incursion by a military
convoy and attacks against indigenous EZLN sympathizers.

June 4th. In Nazareth (Region Estrella). More that a thousand soldiers,
Public Security and Judicial police and migration agents invaded this
community and set up camp. 300 indigenous EZLN sympathizers took refuge
on land of a neighboring community.

June 4th and 5th. In La Garrucha (Canhada de Patihuitz). A concentration
of military and police troops in the military camp located at the edge of
town, seat of the autonomous municipality Francisco Gomez.

June 6th. In San Jose (Region Selva). 200 soldiers entered the town and
executed sweeps for several hours before leaving.

In Santa Lucia (Canhada Tojolobal). Soldiers invaded, installing a
military camp.

In Tila (Zona Norte). Public Security police assassinated Candido Arcos
Torres, a zapatista sympathizers of the community of Jolnopa; indigenous
people take over the municipal presidency and burn a Public Security
truck.

June 7th. In Francisco Villa. (Canhada Las Tazas). A military invasion
of a zapatista community.

In Pavorreal (Valles de Ocosingo, autonomous municipality of Francisco
Gomez). A police invasion.

In Chenalho (Region Altos). A military operation of 200 anti-narcotics
soliders in three communities of that municipality.

June 8th. During the burial of Candido Arcos, paramilitaries from the
group Paz y Justicia and Public Security police shoot into the air and
insult the group gathered there.

June 9th. In La Trinidad (Canhada Las Tazas, Ocosingo). 700 soliders and
Public Security police invade the community and install a military camp.
In the Tzotzil-Tzeltal indigenous market, "Benito Juarez," in San
Cristobal de las Casas, 60 members of citizen protection along with 40
other people attempt to oust a group of merchants, leaving several injured
and 6 wounded.

Those arrested during this offensive are to date:

Jeronimo Hernandez Perez, Manuel Perez Constantino and Florentino Perez
Tovilla, Miguel Hernandez Sanchez, Joaquin Hernadez Santiz, Jose Santiz
Gomez.

We demand that the new Secretary of Government, Diodoro Carrasco and the
Substitute Governor of the Substitute Albores Guillen put a STOP to their
repressive policy. As Mexican civil society we ask them what new
arguments they have to justify these acts of terror, intimidation,
repression and Human Rights violations against these indigenous
communities. What Peaceful or Political resolution are they talking about,
while repression increases at an alarming rate, and militarization
increasingly closes in on the EZLN in open provocation? We ask for
guarantees for the civil observation brigatds which are leaving today for
the communities of Nazareth and La Trinidad. We urgently invite civil
society throughout the country to join the observation brigades that we
are carrying out; call 96783424 or 96782104. At the same time we call on
them to mobilize with a variety of actions to repudiate this new
governmental offensive.
