Chippewas want casinos just for them

A BIG DEAL?
Probably not.
But was it hypocritical?
Maybe.

Anyway, it turns out the hotly anti-Detroit-casinos Coalition to Repeal E,
based in Flint, raised and spent $451,000 in last year's failed attempt to
block casinos in the city ...every cent contributed by the hotly
pro-gambling Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe that runs the Soaring Eagle
Casino & Resort in Mt. Pleasant.

Hmmm.

It was no secret, of course, that for competitive reasons, the Soaring
Eagle folks were opposed to Detroit casinos. And, indeed, news stories last
year reported that petition signatures were being collected at the Soaring
Eagle Casino itself to try to get the anti-Detroit-casino proposal on the
ballot (it failed for lack of sufficient signatures).

But a long-delayed filing with the state Bureau of Elections that came to
public attention last week is the first confirmation that anti-gambling
forces had accepted big money from pro-gamblers.

Even the Rev. Allen Rice, coordinator of the original anti-Detroit-casino
effort and treasurer of an anti-Proposal E coalition based in Lansing that
worked closely with the Flint group, said Friday he was unaware of the
Saginaw Chippewa money until told of it by the Free Press.

"Our original committee was very straitlaced," he said, referring to its
policy of not accepting contributions from competing pro-gambling
interests, including horse racing and Indian gaming.
