A sixth weekend of protests by American Indian activists in Whiteclay, Nebraska,
proved uneventful Saturday.

A Nebraska State Patrol spokesman says about 50 people marched from the Pine Ridge
Indian Reservation into Whiteclay at about 1:25 p.m. and left 20 minutes later. Area
Whiteclay retailers said the protests went almost unnoticed. That’s a far cry from
demonstrations made several weeks ago, when more than 100 State Troopers clad in riot
gear stood toe-to-toe with the marchers. That rally led to the arrests of nine
American Indians for crossing a police line. Activists are protesting millions of
dollars in alcohol sales at Whiteclay and what they believe is inadequate
investigation into the deaths of two Sioux men.
