MOHICAN COMPOSER BRENT MICHAEL DAVIDS' FIRST SYMPHONY
"PAU-WAU, A GATHERING OF NATIONS" FEATURES POWWOW EMCEE SAMMY "TONE-KEI" WHITE

ANADARKO, OK, August 19, 1999 -- Sammy "Tone-Kei" White, Kiowa, of
Anadarko, announced recently that he will participate as the M.C./narrator
in a symphony composed by Mohican (Algonquin) composer Brent Michael
Davids. The first performances will take place at the University of New
Mexico on December 10 and 11, 1999.

Davids, composer and musician, has completed his first symphony, modeled
after a pow wow. A thirty to forty minute work, "Pau-Wau, A Gathering of
Nations" is subtitled "A Day in the Life of a Powwow" and employs a full
symphony orchestra, a chorus, and a powwow Master of Ceremonies. The M.C.
is heard throughout the symphony, just as he is at a powwow, directing,
explaining, announcing, and entertaining. In this case, the M.C. helps
explain the orchestral music as well as the events of the powwow, according
to the composer.

Davids, a resident of Minneapolis, says the work is composed of movements
representing the typical progress of a powwow which segue into each other
rather than stopping completely. He has designed special percussion
instruments to be used for the work, which will be performed in December by
New Mexico's 88 piece symphony orchestra and a 100 voice chorus, with David
Lockwood directing. Sammy "Tone-kei" White, powwow M.C., was chosen to be
the central figure of the work four years ago. He has emceed major powwows
since the late 1960's.

The first two performances of this major work will take place at Popejoy
Hall at the University of New Mexico, one at 8 p.m. December 10, 1999, and
the second on December 11 at 6 p.m.
