A dispute over alleged conflict of interest resulted in an adjournment of the proceedings, which are expected to be the costliest in Manitoba history, and which are being held in a special $3.6-million high-security courthouse. "The time to have a crisis is now and not six months from now," ruled Court of Queen's Bench Justice Ruth Krindle. The 1997 anti-gang legislation carries a maximum 14-year sentence for involvement in a criminal organization of five or more people. Members of motorcycle gangs in Quebec and Alberta have been charged under the new law and are awaiting trial. An Ontario man pleaded guilty under the law in 1997 and was sentenced to five years in prison, although he tried to withdraw his guilty plea and challenge the statute. At issue yesterday was Kingsley Kline, who recently agreed to become a witness in exchange for drug trafficking and criminal conspiracy charges against him being stayed. The conflict of interest was alleged because law firm Phillips Aiello used to represent Kline and still represents six clients in the trial. Before the adjournment, another man pleaded guilty, reducing the total number of accused to 29 from the 35 initially charged in last November's sweeping arrest of alleged street gang members.
