Nunavut group sues Ottawa over land claim http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2006/12/06/2654574-cp.html
(CP) - The organization that looks after the Nunavut Land Claim is suing the federal government for $1 billion, claiming that Ottawa has failed to keep its side of the bargain. The lawsuit, filed by Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI), alleges that Inuit lose about $123 million a year in wages and benefits because too many federal jobs go to workers from the south, despite guarantees in the claim that a representative portion of those jobs would go to northerners. NTI head Paul Kaludjak said the lawsuit comes after all attempts to negotiate an implementation contract broke down. The lawsuit also comes after a report by former Justice Thomas Berger, who agreed Ottawa has failed to live up to its obligations and blamed the lack of Inuit government workers on a poorly designed education system in Nunavut.
