Mrs. Lennon's first/second grade looping class will be sending their class mascot, a stuffed animal goose, to classrooms around the world. Join us on our quest to learn about other places and be a host classroom for Lucy the Goose. ------------------- Project Details ------------------- Project Level: Basic Curriculum Area: Community Interest, History and Social Studies, Language, Mathematics, Technology Technologies Used: Email, Web Based Discussion Forum Full Project Description: Branson, Missouri is a beautiful tourist town located in the Ozark Mountains. Due to the many lakes, woods, and hills, Branson is home to a variety of wildlife, including many Canadian geese. Our class mascot is a stuffed animal goose named Lucy, who we would like to send as an ambassador to other classrooms in the United States and around the world. Lucy will travel with a passport, scrapbook, and video tape. Host classrooms will be asked to share information about the landforms in their town, as well as other interesting facts about their town, school, and classroom. Email communication and posting to a discussion board will allow students in the project to share information with each other. We hope to have Lucy visit 25 classrooms from April 2002 to April 2003 for one week at a time. Lucy's travels will be documented on her web page (http://www.thematzats.com/goose). Objectives: Participating students will learn about landforms and animals from other regions; learn about other communities, cultures, and students; communicate via email, video tape, and postcards, and share information by posting to a discussion board. Graphing, map skills, and a variety of written communication objectives can easily be met with this project. ------------------- Project Registration Information -------------------------------- Project Email Address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Registration Acceptance Dates: 4/16/02 to 3/01/03 Number of Classrooms: 25 Age Range: 5 to 11 years Target Audience: Anyone Project URL: http://www.thematzats.com/goose Registration Instructions: Contact Ginny Lennon at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the following information: Full name, email address, home phone number, school name and address, school URL (if applicable), best time to host Lucy, and why you would like to host our traveling goose. -------------------------------- Project Contact Information ---------------------------- Cynthia Matzat - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] eMINTS Area Instructional Specialist - University of Missouri - MOREnet - eMINTS Project Columbia, Missouri US http://emints.more.net ---------------------------- _______________________________________________ [EMAIL PROTECTED] - K-12 Project Announcements Unsubscribe at http://www.gsh.org/lists/hilites.html =.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=. Sponsored by the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) and Cable in the Classroom, webTeacher (www.webteacher.org) has been online since 1996 and is available free of charge. "We're pleased to offer these major improvements," said Karen Smith, Executive Director of TECH CORPS. "The Internet is changing rapidly, and the web's potential for positive impact on education has become profound. So it's critical to keep the tutorial up to date, and thanks to Cable in the Classroom, we're able to maintain the high standards that our thousands of educators have come to expect from webTeacher." Over 30 sections and 125 subsections of information, covering almost every aspect of the web as it pertains to primary and secondary education, have been updated to reflect technological advances and trends. Sections on digital cameras, scanners and web cams have been added, along with new screen shots and resources. The upgrade includes a new streamlined look, but follows some of the fundamentals established in the original webTeacher tutorial, which attracted over 100,000 users every month. "Our mission is to train teachers and help schools with technology, but we can't get tech volunteers into every school in Connecticut, explained TECH CORPS Connecticut State Organizer, Stefanie Nicholas. "WebTeacher allows us to help teachers in every school system in the state." TECH CORPS Connecticut , based in New Haven and sponsored by Connecticut Voices for Children, is the local chapter of the national organization, based in Massachusetts. "We know the users have always liked the way webTeacher was organized," says Dr. Mike Guidry, one of the authors of webTeacher and President of LightCone Interactive, which provided support for the technical and design aspects of the TECH CORPS web site, "so we tried to maintain familiar patterns we had already established while giving the tutorial a more current look and feel." LightCone is a multimedia programming and design company specializing in interactive and educational applications. WebTeacher's subject matter has been re-organized into six main subject areas: ? Web Basics - navigating and finding things on the Web ? Communicating - email, newsgroups, and videoconferencing ? Multimedia - working with image, sound and movie files ? Homepage construction - building web pages and more advanced programs ? Peripherals and Utilities - digital cameras, scanners and web cams ? Web in the Classroom - additional resources, lesson plans and Internet safety The webTeacher curriculum automatically accommodates Windows users using Internet Explorer or Mac users using Netscape's browser. Users choose whether to go through the tutorial sequentially or skip around to the sections in the site of most interest to them. WebTeacher is designed for teachers to use on their own, at their own convenience. TECH CORPS volunteers - technology pros donating their time and talents to schools - are also available to provide online mentoring to those who want more personal attention. Some TECH CORPS volunteers even use this curriculum to train teachers on-site in their own schools. # # # TECH CORPS TECH CORPS (www.techcorps.org) is the leading national nonprofit mobilizing technology volunteers into schools, providing tech support and teacher training. TECH CORPS offers high quality technological resources that enrich K-12 teaching and learning and prepare tomorrow's workforce. Founded in 1995 and sponsored by such companies as Cisco, Compaq and Intel, TECH CORPS engages a nationwide network of thousands of technology volunteers in over two-dozen state chapters. TECH CORPS strives for a technologically literate society in which all students have equal access to technology programs, resources and skills to enrich their education and allow them to compete successfully in the global workforce. CABLE IN THE CLASSROOM Cable in the Classroom (CIC, www.ciconline.org) represents the cable telecommunications industry's efforts to use cable content and new technologies to improve teaching and learning for children in schools, at home, and in their communities. By focusing on five essential elements of a good education in the 21st century - visionary and sensible use of technologies, engagement with rich content, community with other learners, excellent teaching, and the support of parents and other adults - the cable industry works for positive change in education locally and nationally. ===== Stefanie C. Just fill in the blanks and click "sign me up." You will receive an automated response with your new username for logging in to the web site. Grade Levels: K-12 Objectives: to use writing process/skills to communicate a drawing of student-created monster into detailed written descriptions that students from cooperating schools read to duplicate the original drawing as closely as possible. The real challenge is that the remotely drawn monster is created only from reading the description! At the end of the project, both the original and duplicate drawings are digitized and published on the web in the Monster Galleries so that participants can see the resulting drawings for comparison. Evaluation of student work: write a final email message to the partner class discussing the differences between each of the student's work. PLEASE NOTE: Illustration content drawn by the students should be appropriate for cross cultures and suitable for children of all ages. Example: Illustrations with blood and weapons may be inappropriate for some children.
