Serbia's Trade Deficit Widens to $4.54B
10.04.2004, 09:36 AM

Serbia's trade deficit has soared to US$4.54 billion (euro3.68 billion) in
the first eight months this year - up nearly 60 percentage points over the
same time last year, the republic's Statistic's Bureau said Monday.

Broadly liberalized imports have worsened the trade imbalance, the
authorities said.

The total value of imports and exports from January-August was at US$8.85
billion (euro7.2 billion), up by 38.4 percent from last year's US$6.39
billion, but the imports grew much faster than export, said the bureau.

Serbia's exports now account for only 32.2 percent of the foreign trade
exchange, down from 38.3 percent in the comparable period last year, the
officials said.

The republic's main trade partners are Russia and Germany, followed by
neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy.
