*************************************** Waiting for Izzy Sorry for the lateness of today's issue, but we've been busy battening down the hatches in anticipation of yet another hurricane that hasn't been named after an African-American, as demanded by Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee recently. Let's see, since we moved back east from beautiful, sunny, warm Las Vegas, we've experienced cold, blizzards, rain, floods...and now a hurricane. Tell me again why I did this? *************************************** Putting UN to Use In its "Pundits" column this week, The Hill asked if the United Nations should step up its role in Iraq. Jonah Goldberg of National Review Online responded, "Yeah, sure. Somebody's got to scrub the toilets." *************************************** Have Our Cake & Eat It, Too "Americans demand both security and freedom and believe we can have both. The (Bush) administration is tasked with protecting us but should be on notice now that Americans are simply unwilling to give up their rights to make that task easier just because (Attorney General John) Ashcroft's bureaucrats say we should trust them." - Dave Keene, chairman, American Conservative Union *************************************** Hey, Sonny: We Miss You, Babe "Asked what he thought about illegal immigration, the late singer-politician Sonny Bono replied: 'It's illegal.' Nowadays, of course, referring to illegal immigration as somehow illegal is considered overly harsh and judgmental, perhaps racist and nativist as well." - Columnist John Leo *************************************** Playing Latinos for Suckers "Democrats (with their filibuster of judicial nominee Miguel Estrada) have shown they do not care about the advancement of Hispanics, but rather only with the advancement of Democrats who happen to be Hispanic." - Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) *************************************** Suspending Belief "A panel of three liberal judges, all appointed by Democrats, are asking us to believe that the voting systems that were used (in California) last November to elect Gray Davis (as governor) aren't good enough for an election to remove him from office." - Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) on the 9th Circuit Court's decision to postpone the October 7 recall election *************************************** At Least They're Consistent "The 9th Circuit is sort of the laughing stock of the Supreme Court bar. They are notorious for having the most appeals to the Supreme Court and being reversed the most often." - Election law attorney Jan Baran, Washington Times, 9/17/03 *************************************** 4.75 cents-per-minute Long Distance * All state-to-state calls in the continental U.S. * Residential or commercial * 6-second billing increments * 24 hours/day * 7 days/week * No access codes * No minimums * No activation fees * Calling Card Rate is 10 cents per minute * No monthly service charge unless your bill is less than $20.00 a month (then a $1.99 service charge will apply) * No need to change your local phone company * No hassles * Easy sign-up. * And a small portion of each bill goes to help continue publishing our FREE Chuck Muth's News & Views e-newsletter. Lamar Alexander (R-Ten.), former secretary of education, The Hill, 9/17/03 *************************************** Big Education vs. Poor Parents "(House Democrats) have union endorsements, union money. These poor black families don't have a PAC." - Rep. Tom Davis, Virginia Republican, on Democrat congressmen who voted against school vouchers for DC students, The Hill, 9/16/03 *************************************** Vouching for School Choice "By one vote, the House of Representatives decided last week to give needy students in the District of Columbia a fighting chance at a better education. Now the Senate is up to bat. . . . This victory - narrow though it was - demonstrates money does not always carry the day. The teachers unions, a vital constituency for Democrats, have been most generous to Democratic candidates who vote against vouchers. (All but three Democrats in the House of Representatives voted against the bill.) "But there is no money on the side favoring vouchers. Certainly the parents of poor children attending weak or miserable public schools do not have the ability to contribute to political campaigns. The Republicans who voted in favor of the plan did so because they believe in it." - Columnist Mona Charen *************************************** Kennedy to Poor Kids: "Up Yours" "There simply are no more excuses when it comes to opposing school choice. The financial bottom line constantly changes, but the academic bottom line remains unchanged - the longer a child stays in D.C. Public Schools, the worse off he becomes. (D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes) Norton and (Sen. Ted) Kennedy seem to find it in their liberal hearts to advocate civil rights and freedoms all the time. Yet, both lawmakers have vowed to do anything and everything possible to deny poor families the opportunity to send their children to non-public schools on the taxpayers' dime. Both lawmakers insist that pouring more money into D.C. Public Schools will 'fix the system.' - Washington Times editorial, 9/17/03 *************************************** Mo' Money Ain't the Answer "Per-pupil spending (in the District of Columbia) exceeds the national average by nearly 50 percent, but college-bound D.C. students in public school scored 799 on their combined math and verbal 2003 SAT tests, compared to 1190 by D.C. students in parochial school, 1218 by children at D.C. independent schools and a national average of 1026. "...All this needs to be borne constantly in mind in the controversy over school vouchers. Doing nothing is not an acceptable option. No politician, of left or right, should be satisfied with the status quo or prepared to let it continue a second longer than necessary. - The Hill editorial, 9/17/03 *************************************** Home Schooling: An American Tradition "Home schooling is a very old way of doing things. If you look at any of the bills in your wallet or the coins in your pocket, they all have a picture of a home-schooler on them." - William Lloyd, National Home Education Research Institute, Baltimore Sun, 9/15/03 *************************************** Breaking the Public School Monopoly "Home schooling is growing and will continue to grow between 7 and 12 percent per year." - Brian Ray of the National Home Education Research Institute, Baltimore Sun, 9/15/03 *************************************** Moose Droppings "(Monday was) the publication day for Charles Moose's as-told-to insta-book about the Washington sniper shootings. The more we learn about Moose, the happier I am that he no longer runs the police department of Montgomery County, Md., where I live." - Columnist Gregg Easterbook, New Republic Online, 9/15/03 *************************************** Affordable Campaign Websites!
