I’ve been tracking Veeries in this region using geolocators since 2009.
Post-breeding (or perhaps more accurately, post-molt movement) is very likely,
in fact, probable. I’ve seen signs of some odd small-scale movement in August
in our Delaware population but the resolution using geos (~150km radius)
doesn’t seem quite good enough to discern much in most cases (there are a few
exceptions). I’ve had it in mind to look at this in some detail at some point
when I have the time, as it is possible some patterns are identifiable, but it
may have to wait for more data or refined technology. Aug 7th would be too
early for significant migratory movement according to my data. However, HY
birds may be doing something different as we are not able to track that age
group.

I'm a bit southeast from you in Montgomery County. I've only started recording
the last two nights with very few NFC heard (less than 5 per hour). I've heard
no thrushes.

Is it possible the Veery are just doing short range post breeding migration?

Tonight looks to be much better on the radar btw!

At about 5:00 a.m. Aug. 5, I heard about 20 flight calls of Veery as birds
descended into the woods around my house in southeastern PA. The birds switch
to using more familiar diurnal calls shortly after they land in the woods.
Based on those calls, about 5 birds were present. Has anyone with recording
equipment recorded any Veery migrants yet this season?
