Now the situation has turned around again and a new project called 'Whistler' is on its way. It is due out in 2001, and will graft Microsoft's consumer desktop, which is Windows 9x-based, onto a Windows 2000 based kernel. This combined O/S will still have different flavors (for business and consumers) but they will be built with the same kernel. That of course makes it a lot easier to control the process of updates and upgrades. More over, applications only need to be compiled and verified just _once_ so this makes MS much more efficient. One wonders a bit if merging these two Operating Systems was pushed to the front burner to create a barrier against splitting MS up in separate businesses, one for W95/98 and the other for NT/2000. I will keep you up to date on the further developments. That's all for the moment!
