Aside from that, the existing Cisco Press book is decent. But depending on what you want to know, printing the config and command ref guide should do what you need.

Ditto! I'd run a PIX any day of the week with the ease of configuration.
Have y'all heard about version 6.3.1?? OMG!!! Fair Queuing, VLAN Support, Remote support when you have lots of networks and lots of PIX's but have to telnet/SSH every damn place to get to em... It's gonna ROCK!!

Checkpoint cost more to purchase, more in support and maintenance.
The user interface on checkpoint is great, but if you like the Cisco IOS command interface and are used to it, it is very easy to work with. Some people like GUI, doesn't really matter too much to me. I always love the copy and paste command features with the cisco ios.
I can configure my entire device in notepad and just paste it into the telnet session. Bam system configured!

The NG version is even much better than the v4.1. We have NG running for almost one year. It is very reliable and has been improved in the log. The only thing we don't like is their service and support. We are considering to switch the NG to cisco PIX. -----Original Message----- From: Chinnery, Paul [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 01, 2003 10:08 AM To: NT 2000 Discussions Subject: off topic: Checkpoint vs Cisco Pix
We currently use Checkpoint's Firewall-1 v4.1 with Securemote for VPN. However, Checkpoint has announced that they will end support for 4.1 this June.
Consequently, I need to either upgrade to NG or replace it with another solution. The other solution is a Cisco Pix 515E.
I saw some surveys comparing the two but those were limited to 4.1 not the NG solution.
Checkpoint is more in $ but having used it for over 4 years, I am more comfortable with it.
Can someone help me out by relaying your experience with either NG or PIX (or, both).
Thanks,
