I downloaded the patterns file and unzipped it. It put the following
directory in my texmf directory:

.tex/context/patterns

I then ran texhash. I then ran ./mktexlsr --all.

At this point, you missed a step:

 texexec --make


I then ran texexec test.tex.

Still no hyphenation.
