I think Peter means something like this:

normal \tfa big \tfb bigger \tfc biggerer \tf now what?

...where he wants the final one to return to the bodyfontsize.

I would say the "proper" way of doing it is to use grouping, but that
doesn't really directly answer Peter's question.
